April 22, 2010 - Berkana

Berkana

Berkana is the letter B

Anglo-Saxon Rune Poem (from ragweedforge.com)

The birch bears no fruit; yet without seed it brings forth suckers,
for it is generated from its leaves.Splendid are its branches and gloriously adornedits lofty crown which reaches to the skies.

Ok, honestly I think the runes are just mocking me today. Why? It’s Earth Day. And the Rune is Berkana. Them sons of bitches is hilarious.
With all serious though, Berkana points to growth and nurturing. It just depends upon what is being nurtured. Once can nurture unhealthy, harmful and baneful things, as well as helpful, healing, and benevolent things as well. Whether it is baneful or helpful is up to you and your needs and situation. It reminds me of a show I saw recently, where a character kept a greenhouse with a beautiful garden, that she was much celebrated for. But to the knowledgeable, they realized it was a greenhouse filled with poisonous plants, especially of the hallucinogenic kind like Datura, but also henbane, belladonna, and digitalis. It can work the same within yourself, with your friends, with your employment choices and your environment. What are you really growing for yourself?
