Fascination and the Aegishjalmur

The power of fascination or enchantment is one of the more commonly given powers associated with practitioners of magic. Yet, it seems to be the least mentioned ability in many books dealing with magic. The only sources that I have yet to find that deal with it are Agrippa (in his classic 3 books) Paul Huson in Mastering Witchcraft, and Jason Miller in the Sorcerer’s Secrets. It is such a useful technique; it is surprising that so many people seem to ignore it.

For myself, I have found that the aegishjalmur, or the helm of awe (or terror), is a most useful symbol in working this kind of magic, both in a general way and in working with the specific application when interacting with a specific person. I also combine the aegishjalmur with the ideas and techniques presented by the three authors above, so it makes it a pretty effective tool in my bag of tricks.

When you are first starting out, I highly recommend actual putting the aegishjalmur on your forehead. A method described in the galdrabok indicates doing so with your own spit, so work up a good mouthful of saliva (you’ll need it) and using your left index finger, put the aegishjalmur on your forehead. It’s not going to be perfect, so don’t try to make it that way. When you are finished, press your index finger into the center of the symbol and say:

“The helm of awe is upon my brow. Let all strife be stemmed, let all wrath be run away, Let all people look upon me with favor, as the Lady looks upon the Lord with favor and may the world and land be gracious as friends.”

Channel some ond into the symbol and then continue on about your day. You could also use an appropriate condition oil to put the symbol on your forehead, but I find that makes me break out, and having facial blemishes doesn’t really help one in social interaction.

This is the basic set-up for working with the aegishjalmur and using it for persuasion and influence. When it comes time to work on someone specifically, well, you should already have done this. When you find yourself entering into a situation where you want the influence of the helm, start channeling ond into the figure on your forehead. Feel it light up with energy, and start glowing, and that glow starts to wrap itself around you. As you continue to power it, you should also start to feel it acting upon the third eye and perhaps feel ond flow into the subtle channels of the eyes from there. I find that with fascination, eye contact is important. The ond that will radiate from the eyes will carry emotions and desires with it, and for it to “hit” it needs to meet the eyes of the desired target. So, make eye contact. Often times the eye contact will instantly get the attention of the target once it is made, because in this day and age it seems eye contact is something that many people avoid. Depending upon how you want to influence the target, try and keep your face relaxed but following the general intention, i.e., try a subtle smile (practice it) if you are trying to entice the person, and do a subtle frown or tighten your jaw a little if you’re trying to intimidate the target. Once you have the target’s gaze (even if for a second) then continue to move forward. Play a game of cat and mouse, where you are present, but just out of reach. Talk to them briefly, but then indicate you need to go elsewhere (to friends, refresh your drink) to give them space, but then return after a few minutes. If you find the opportunity presents itself, give them an acceptable and friendly touch. The touch should also be charged with ond and your intention, whether it is a handshake or an “accidental” tap with the elbow against their elbow or arm. Of course, if all is going well, they should be paying rapt attention to you, and find ignoring your difficult. If your goal is to get into close contact/quarters with the target, once that occurs, start delivering ond with your breath, your gaze and your touch, all channeled through the helm of awe.

Maybe viewers in the USA maybe familiar with this video. It was commonly shown in many science classes in various high schools, probably across the country. I know I have seen it more then a few times. The purpose of this video is to help give a conceptual sense of how microscopic and how macrocosmic the physical universe is. At either end of those two extremes is a void.

However, the main purpose of this video is more the concepts of scale, and applying that to ones magical and spiritual work. It seems kind of mind-blowing, but so far I have found it to be incredibly effective and also very sublime.

It is mostly a visualization, but one that can be included in any ritual or spell or technique. The main areas that I have experimented directly with is healing. Visualzing a healing symbol imprinting itself onto the very atoms of a being, then the molecules, then the DNA chains, then the cells, the tissues, up to the level of regular experience. Each symbol is sending healing energy, with each level there being trillions, billions, millions of symbols repeated again and again on each level until there is the one symbol existing at every day existence. I found at least that it seemed to help speed recovery.

From the opposite end, you can continue to send energy, concept, a vibration until it fills all the space around you, your home, your block, your neighborhood, your city, county, metro area, region, country, continent, hemisphere, world, solar system, galaxy until all space is filled with light, or love, or peace, etc... You could just as easily focus on more challenging concepts like entropy or death, and perhaps tie that into dark matter and black holes, but touching on galactic concepts can be a major mind trip and a brush with enlightenment.

You could pair the concepts with the Underworld, perhaps a sacred quantum chthonic realm, or a holy galactic celestial world, and bring their energies down into. The roots of the Tree and it’s branches can far out reach the physical touch of men, but the conceptual can move to it’s very tips. Bringing both down into the mid-realm, the world of form and substance can bring on a heady rush of enlightment, but also give energies that can be effectively channeled for any number of purposes.

I am sorry if this seems a little vague or unclear, but it’s a concept I am playing with in my personal work and contemplation.

Another year is here and for many people it is a year they hope will bring a much needed relief for the challenges that have been faced in 2011. It also seems to be a time when people are now looking to transform themselves completely. .

Part of the wonder of it all was this great feeling of expectancy that was building from the Winter Solstice until January 1. Like waiting for a child to be born, it felt like Solstice and Christmas were more like the water breaking and the first contractions before the real birth happened and out popped Baby 2012.

I think I am going to dream big. Even if I don’t realize all my dreams fully, they are going to be so big that even making it half way will be impressive.

Love Magic vs. Controlling Magic

Recently it seems in some new literary acquisitions that there is this returning theme of condemning love magic, specifically love magic directed towards a specific person. The arguments about ethics and morality, and the metaphysics behind the differing authors’ statements were, while worded different, pretty much the same thing. It’s about “karma” (and I don’t mean Hindu cosmology, but rather the very popular notion that immorality gets punished by the universe) and controlling people, or rather “removing a person’s free will.”

A love spell is exactly that, a spell that conjures forth love. Much like the proverbial rabbit out of the hat however, it can only conjure up love that is present. If rabbits didn’t exist, there would be no rabbit. If that love is not there, then said person will not love you. Thus why love spells cannot make a person gay or straight. This is why witches don’t have the most popular or favorite celebrity on their arm. This is why sorcerers aren’t walking around dating super models. If love spells were as all powerful as the morality and karma crew seems to paint them, then this would be the case more often, which it is not. It’s much easier to paint some metaphysical schlep reason as to why they don’t work or not do them, then face the cold hard facts that a total stranger who you have at best only the most tenuous connection to, or a familiar acquaintance that you have shyly eyeing from a distance, might not being interested in a romantic, sexual, and/or lasting relationship with you. It’s called rejection, it’s something you need to deal with and get over it, because it happens. A love spell doesn’t remove free will; it doesn’t force someone’s actions where they become near mindless automatons, or emotional sycophants who go pining after someone uncontrollably. All of those images are fictional portrayals of spells, and it is much more to give the reader a thrill then it is an accurate depiction of what really happens in a person specific love spell

All of this is different from controlling magic or compel/command/dominate spells. These operate in various intensities, with the mildest being having an influence where the target or targets favor you, to getting someone to follow through with actions that they have sworn to, to outright commanding people or dominating them. While I can’t say that I have exact percentages, but most people can be influenced to one way or another, and slightly less then that can be compelled to follow through on their sworn actions, not everyone can be commanded or dominated. It just doesn’t always work. When a person is more susceptible to that, even then, it doesn’t work forever, (although it can operate for a long time, depending upon the situation). Humanity just does not take to being made a slave in anyway for an extended period of time. Eventually something inside us rebels against the bondage and restriction, and we fight for our liberty and freedom

I have not been in a position where I would want to dominate someone for that length of time, but I have heard many stories told by first hand witnesses where the domination spell used to make someone’s actions to enter into a relationship went fine, until after a few years, the person needed to do it again, because the target was resisting. Then, a year later, they started resisting again, and so the repeated the spell. Then, 9 months, 6 months, 3 months, every month, and then week, after week, after week, then every few days, then every day. Eventually the person performing the spell gets sick. A cold, the flu, something and they can’t perform the spell for a day, two days, and a week. The person they were dominating shows signs of coming around more and more, and next thing, their relationship is over, a nasty break-up follows, and the person who cast the spell is spiritually and physically exhausted after all that has occurred. They use domination and controlling magic to force someone (who could be forced) into a relationship. It’s not a love spell, it’s a spell of control and they are completely different, although some of the curios used in them might be similar, often their methodologies of deployment, and the words used with them(i.e. incantations, prayers, spells, etc..) are completely different or different enough in language that it can be easily understood to be different.

Most “general love spells” are not actually a love spell at all, but rather a spell of control, aimed only at influencing people around you favorably, mainly to notice you and be attracted to you. Anything that comes from that is more of an example of ones one personal skill at persuasion and influence, through presentation, and social graces. It doesn’t really conjure up love, just attraction or favor, which is different from love

I have felt the influence of a general love spell once, and while I was fond of the person, I don’t think I was actually loved that person in any significant way. It was weird how, after I came across this person, I found my mind could not stop thinking about them, which is very unusual, and when they told me they had cast such a spell, I went about breaking its influence over me, which quickly ended the influence. She called it a “general love spell” but the feelings I felt were not love, just notice, a non-sexual attraction, and an almost obsessed focus on my friend until I broke the spell and ended the influence. It was from that experience that I later realized the difference between a love spell and a controlling spell.

The thing is with love spells and controlling spells is that they can work well together, when used with skill. Influence can be used to attract people to you, while the love spell can then be worked in follow up, if you really feel there is something there. That is when the controlling spell is put away, to see if the love manifests fully. If you keep the control spell going, then you might find yourself in a loveless situation, which can be equally unhappy for both parties.

Urban animism

So, prompted by a discussion I had Kenaz Filan on his blog, it got me to thinking about animism in an urban setting.
This is not really a new idea. There have been books before that brought up this concept, and based upon my own study of chaos magick, there is an intention of interacting with the metaphysical in whatever environment you are in. A communion with the spiritual forces and the spirits that occupy the urban landscape and yet so often the urban landscape is rejected while the people in it seek an escape to a “natural” environment. This, I think, is more of a reflection of the pastoral fantasy people carry in their head, that being in “nature” is better, closer to perfection, and more authentic. However, I see the urban landscape as a natural environment, created by the animal who needs it to live, namely, humanity.
Humans are a part of nature, and yet so often the works and creations of humans are dismissed as “man-made” and “unnatural.” Yet, so often it seems that it is forgotten that humanity is as much a part of nature as any other animal, many of which change their environment to make it more suitable for them. So in the cities and metropolises that humanity has created, we are participating in a natural environment that we have created to make it more suitable for us as a species, but also that other animals have adapated to living in these environments as well. These are the animals we live and are surrounded by on a regular basis, even though we don’t always recognize or even see them most of the time, but when some of them are seen, the illicit strong responses from humanity.
But not only the animals, but the landscape itself also has consciousness. Buildings, roads, cities, districts, vehicles, structural materials can all be seen as having a spiritual essence, and so a spiritual intelligence that can be communed, allied, fought or negotiated with, much as a spirit worker in any culture would have to interact with and being the herald and diplomat for the his community with their environment. Yet if often seems that the urban spirit workers don’t engage with the spirits of their environment, from the animals that also live in it with humanity, to the spirits that are connected to the homes and structures they live and work in, to the roads they travel, or even to the city itself. These spiritual intelligences are neglected, in favor of the pastoral mystique, of majestic wild animals far removed from the workers environments, animals that many of these workers will never experience first hand in their natural environment.
Of course the spirits of the land have become part of the spirits of the city that covers it. One could just as well connect with the spirit of Los Angeles, or seek the spirits that serve within it, such as Hollywood, Koreatown, or even Downtown LA. Within those are the spirits of buildings themselves, from the spirit that governs your home, to the office building you may work in all have spirits that can be cajoled, placated, and interacted with. Some might be very strong, old and wise, while others might be very young, and enjoy having the attentions of the local spirit-worker who brings them offerings to make them stronger, and so help her community.
Even more local and specific are the ghosts and lost souls that wander in the urban landscape. Often the older the city, the more ghosts there are, as stories are told of the house where people were died and they return and are seen, to the street where an old gunfight occurred. I was told by a friend once that the lost dead wander the alleys of cities, and thus to avoid allies at night as much as possible, otherwise you might find yourself with a companion following you. Of course cemeteries exist with the city, the places designated where people are laid to rest. The dead can be accessed there, although you might want to learn some of the rules followed by various cultures that are friendly with the dead on how to interact with them. But ghosts can be found in many other places across the city, as most older places have stories associated with them, and sometimes after building have been torn down and replaced, the ghosts of the prior building linger on, to continue to haunt the new building.
These are just examples of the many crossroads that spiritual beings make with humanity, and with the spirit-workers among humanity. Suffice to say that there is much to be experienced within the spiritual landscape of an urban environment. Wisdom, allies, aid can all be gained by connecting with the spirits around you, and as the spirits of the land and personal environment play a more direct role, they are spirits worth communing with.

Ok ok, I get it. I haven’t posted in a while. At first I was severely lacking for inspiration, then I was sick, and now I am just being lazy and creatively blocked since I just don’t know where to begin. I have been posting occasionally over at Hoodoo Crossroads, on topics related to the practice and application of Conjure, but things here have been, well, quiet. This heat wave hitting the Greater Los Angeles area just isn’t helping right now either, as it makes it too hot for me to think, or at least I feel that way.
Then there is also the work side of it. Having something to write about, because I am doing something, and I have been, it is just the process of coming to a better understanding to where I can express it clearly in words. No, it’s not a deep mystical experience but, as with all kinds of spiritual work, walking it and talking it isn’t always easy.

For a long time, I have avoided the word psychic. It was a word that I felt never applied to me, mainly because I don’t see dead people, I don’t read minds, and I don’t know the whole of a person before I even talk to them. But I do have gifts, gifts that do make me sensitive to extraordinary or spiritual forces. It is from those gifts that I sought out to magic and to study all its forms, and I am on the spiritual and magical path that I am on.

Lately, I have been pondering what it means to be psychic. This is a term that I see often, usually in relation to being a reader, ie “a psychic reader”. The popular connotation seems to be one where people have great expectations of someone who claims to be psychic. Readings a persons mind, knowing almost everything about them, and vivid exacting predictions of the future are the most well known examples of what people expect from a psychic, at least if they have never been to one. Of course, all of this is suppose to happen the instant the client walks into the room and sits down to the table where the psychic reader is plying their craft. As many ads for readers indicate, there is a slight promotion of these traits, at least to attract clients, from regular ones to one-timer who come out of curiosity or desperation. Looking at the definitions of psychic, and the words it is derived from, the potential of being psychic is a completely different thing. At least by one meaning, psychic and magic could almost be exchangeable words, as they both are nouns relating to phenomena that lies outside the sphere of physical science and knowledge. As an adjective, psychic can take many forms. Sensitivity to nonphysical or supernatural influence, or an extraordinary sensitivity can relate to many things. It isn’t always about being able to read minds, see the future, or knowing information without physical access. Sometimes it can just be an innate sense to danger, or a sense of what action to take, either to insure success or just have a fortunate day. That same sensitivity could relate to the root word of psychic, the word psyche. As psyche means soul, personality, or mind, a psychic person could just as well be someone whose soul, personality or mind is perhaps one of their stronger qualities. That greater talent in psyche might cause one to seem to be the other kind of psychic. As the strength of your soul, mind, or personality, gives one the ability to perceive with extraordinary sensitivity, or to originate things from a non-physical source.

At least by that meaning, almost everyone is “psychic” as many people seem to tap into moments where they are aware of, or connected to influences that come from a nonphysical source. It is those who are gifted with connections above and beyond the infrequent and mild sensitivity that some people feel that are more renowned, and sometimes more haunted by their gifts. I have met a few people who have told me of childhoods lived in fear, from going out in public where the thought of every person they encounter is made clear to them, from happy people, to scary thoughts of neighbors. Another who has difficulty sleeping throught the night because it seems every ghost (and I mean by that a spirit of a deceased human) comes visiting them, drawing attention to itself for some unknown reason. Many of these people just want a normal life, and so they never develop those gifts, but their gifts never decrease either, except through numbing the senses, often through alcohol, drugs, or other addictive and destructive behaviors.

Of course, forever every one person haunted by psychic gifts, it often seems that there are more with very slight gifts who are trying to develop and improve them. I can’t say I have ever met someone who managed to work their slight gift into great gift, but I have seen plenty of people make the best of their slight gift, and turn into something useful and practical, which served them well, and helped make their lives better. I think, that is of course, one of the great keys to being a really great psychic, as within any talent, gift or interest. It can only improve with practice and application. Much in the same way that Einstein wasn’t a genius, but yet he revolutionized the science of physics, and how people understand the world through physics, so can a person with average gifts, become a great and recognized psychic, either as a reader or spiritual worker.

Runes of Love

Love spells! Everyone wants love spells. When it comes to doing magic, often time when clients come many a reader, sorcerer or spiritual worker, they are looking for love, either to get new love, re-gain love that has been lost, or move a current love into a new situation, such as marriage. Of course, part of the field of Love spells, also includes spells that promote harmony among people, from married couples to families and communities.

It often seems to me that Love magic is the ignored part of working with runes. Maybe a footnote here, or a value given there, but in many books dealing with runes and rune magic, Love is often overlooked, although that maybe the prior trend of the “unpopularity” of love magic with the Neo-pagan movement. However, it’s pretty clear from some surviving written lore, that spells that promote love and harmony were definitely part of the Northern Tradition.

I would like to turn to the Havamal in this case, and the runes described by the speaker. The first stanza that identifies a spell dealing with promoting love (or in this case harmony) is the stanza of the eigth rune:

An eighth I know: which all can singfor their weal if they learn it well;where hate shall wax 'mid the warrior sons,I can calm it soon with that song

Where the hate and conflict among kin can be soothed through singers magic skill. The second stanza identifying love magic is the sixteenth rune:

A sixteenth I know: when all sweetness and loveI would win from some artful wench,her heart I turn, and the whole mind changeof that fair-armed lady I love.

And the seventeenth:

A seventeenth I know: so that e'en the shy maidenis slow to shun my love.

Being the clearest examples of what is recognized as love magic. Of course the singer indicates his mastery in the this art, as he is able to win the love of not only other skillful women, but even young shy women who are often harder to obtain.

To this end, I looked to the runes, seeking and identifying which runes resonate with the powers of love, harmony, and relationships. With my research I identified nine runes, which can be worked, separately or together, in master the arts of love magic.

In the ordering of the futhorc aettirs, the first rune identified is Kenaz. Kenaz, the torch, is the fires of passion. They ignite the feeling inside, a flame that reveals the desires, but also burns. The burning passion leaves little peace, until they have been satiated.

The next rune is Gebo. In Gebo we see the exchange of relationships, partnerships, the agreements, the contracts, the idea of dowry, union of people and the rules that govern that union. Gebo is the most unromantic side of love magic, the side that comes after “and they all lived happily ever after” which people often want to forget. It is having the skills in this side that make relationships succeed or fail, and being able to manage the give and take successfully will often help in being successful in whatever partnership is entered into.

The third rune of love is Wunjo. Joy is it’s name, and joy can be a wonderful, if temporal thing. This is one of the first runes I identify with harmony among people, although in this case it is usually familial harmony. The conflicts between spouses, between parents and children, between siblings, can all create a very unharmonious and dissonant environment. Wunjo is the joy and peace of happy family, and a happy familial home. It’s dark side can be the grasping for this temporal thing. When everything is sacrified, just so that one can maintain the illusion that life is free from strife, the grasping for joy can become a toxic quest, and the peace is shallow, and soon shattered.

Interestingly enough, a whole aettir is skipped here. I studied this for a while, but part of my understanding of the second aettir, the aettir of Hagal, is that it is the runes of warrior, and conflict. While there are runes here that might be useful in influence and command (which has sometimes role in the world of love spells) they are not really concerned with love per se, but with having influence over other people, to any end.

The fourth rune is Berkana. In Berkana is the love of a mother for it’s child in sense. It is nurturing, supportive, and steady. It is also powerfully feminine, which can be somewhat hard to describe exactly how. It is the rune of Women, and express the powers of women, not just girly, but also Amazonian. The mysteries of Women who Love Women are found in this rune, which has it’s own draw, but it can also be used by women to draw whatever kind of love they desire, especially when combined with other runes, or to heal a womans sexual nature, if it has been damaged or cursed.

The fifth rune is Mannaz. In Maanaz, there is the coming together of equals, or rather the marriage of equals. While the rules of marriage belong to Gebo, means of relating to each other are found in Mannaz. This marriage of equals also governs friendship, the brother and sister-hood of humanity. This rune promotes the harmony of whole communities, but also individual people. This is love without lust, just a simple affection, which flows out from within. The idea that comes to me is that deep within each person, there is Love, and when this love is allowed to expressed freely, without expectation of return, or demands, is when people can get along innocently.

The sixth rune is Inguz. As Berkana is to feminity, Inguz is to masculinity. It is a great power, that lies dormant, until it is triggered and released, bring strength and setting change in motion. It can be aggressive and rough when needed, but mostly it is strong and solid. It is the rune of Men and in many ways directly relates to the phallus. It is not only the usual masculine stereotype, but also the gentle man, who can be strong, but sensitive. It also contains the mysteries of Men who Love Men, but it can be used by all men to attract Love, and also sex. It can also helping curing the damaged sexual nature of men, whatever their orientation.

The seventh rune is Ac, the mighty Oak tree. In the permanence and endurance of Ac is fidelity, the ability to stay the course and endure the trials of Love. While many love spells used to promote fidelity were the domain of women who livelihood often depended upon the fidelity of their husbands, who if they could get to stay at home night, at least to make sure they come home when they are done. Fidelity is also about staying together, “for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health.” Sometimes the stress of living can sow the seeds of discontent between partnered couples, and it may take the patience of the partners to rise above their own trials, and embrace their partner(s). In exchange, it also buries jealousy, as I was taught growing up that “jealousy is the grave of affection” and being able to stand fast by your partner, when perhaps they are succeeding, and your own efforts are impeded or faltering can be a difficult thing.

The eighth rune is Ior. Ior is the rune of boundaries and finding happiness within those boundaries. Sometimes, that happiness is found by transgressing what is perceived as binding us, but sometimes it is also recognizing that boundary helps us to nurture ourselves and find our own happiness, wherever it maybe. Happiness is an amorphous thing, and constantly changes. What feeds your happiness today, is not what fed your happiness yesterday, and may not sustain your happiness tomorrow. Being able to change, adapt, and move between environments, elements, or even worlds is a survival skill, that opens up opportunities to find new resources that can sustain you.

The ninth rune is Khalk. Khalk is the cup of desires, the loving cup which contains all that one can want. Contained within the wondrous draught is the fulfillment of our hearts content, yet the difficult part is getting the drink. It can show you what it is you really seek, from this person, from this relationship, from this moment, but it can also make you that which is sought. Glamor was the popular word used for such thing, the magical gilding which brings out the best in each person, showing them as the desired prize, yet keeping it just unattainable enough that they want it all the more. Khalk proves the desire is not about being the best looking, but having the confidence to show your worth.

Having worked with these runes in love magic over the past couple of weeks, I can tell you, yeah it works, quite well. My first experiment was working with each rune, to see how they would manifest. Over the course of nine days, combining the runes with other love-drawing methods (red candles, condition oils, and galdr) those nine days were some of the more interesting escapades in love that I have had.

Weal and Woe

A while ago I picked a book about Afro-cuban divination, a system called the diloggun. A neighbor of mine is a practitioner of Santeria and after having witnessed him conduct a reading, and spending time with him I became curious about the whole process and methods. It is a wonderfully simple and yet complex system. Simple because the actual physical process is not that complicated, complex because of the depth with which the diloggun can read, Unlike the average tarot card reading and methods that seem to be based upon that, where the card and the layout is the beginning and the end, the diloggun start with determining a number, and then a number that follows that, and then determining whether that number comes with ire (blessings) or osogbo (misfortune). Following that determination is then where the blessings or misfortune comes from, and how it can be further strengthened (ire) or how it can be lessened or avoided (osogbo). It was the concepts of ire and osogbo that appealed to me strongly, as something that seems to be missing or forgotten in most contemporary divination. Even a lot of contemporary books on modern divination usually tend to put a helpful or positive spin on things that are unpleasant, undesirable or just plain bad or harmful. This seems like a grave disservice to me, but it often seems hard to determine whether the reading being given is really coming with good or with evil. Often times it seems like the default way of doing this with Tarot and systems like it is to interpret all reversed cards as being in some way negative. I have found through personal experience, that this is not the case in the majority of situations..

In working with the runes, I began to ask if the reading or individual runes within the reading are coming with weal (blessings, fortune, benevolence) or woe ( hexes, misfortune, malevolence). The basic method I use for this is to pull another rune and see if that come out upright or reversed, without considering the meaning of the rune itself, at least in most cases. This was fairly accurate, giving an indication of when the action of influence of a rune or reading. The only difficult part was in dealing with runes which do not reverse. There are 13 runes in the Anglo-Saxon/Northumbrian Futhorc that appear the same when you turn them 180 degrees. I found the answer in understanding the nature of these runes, their essence is one that is fixed. Some of these runes will always indicate weal, others will always indicate woe, and a few are also variable, requiring further opening up, but indicating the workings of fate are sealing this and that it may not necessarily be easily changed or come about in a familiar way.

One of things that I have come to understand better from using this process is that just because a rune is reversed, doesn’t necessarily mean that it is a bad or unfortunate thing. While often in books on runes the reversed form is called the myrkstave, and giving indications of negative or unwanted influences. I don’t necessarily agree with that any more. A reversed rune in a reading with weal is that influence is more in their absence. In a reading with woe, the things indicated may not come (if they are desired) or is better avoided. Tiewaz reversed with woe gives a good indication of avoiding any kind of legal problems, government or law enforcement, so buckle your seat belt, don’t forget any documents you might need and don’t sass the bureaucrat behind the desk. Feoh reversed with weal often seems to be an indication when other people are spending their wealth on you, without you spending any money, and just enjoying the pleasure of their company. The normal upright meanings become better applied through this process as well. Thurisaz with weal might be an indicator that some direct and unpleasant action is called for fortune to smile upon. Berkana with woe is an indicator that you should not expect any healing or nurturing during that time period, and possibly to be suspicious of people who do seem over eager to be that way. You might also want to be careful in all dealings with women, and possibly avoid their company as well. The interplay of weal and woe within the meanings offered by the runes opens up greatly and can help the reading deliver it’s message more certainty.

It seems appropriate in using the runes to see how the changes of weal and woe, the fluctuations of luck, a concept that was important to the Northern European cosmology and it’s interaction with fated occurrence, but the fortune or misfortune that may occur inbetween. It seems to be a concept that carries to this day, in showing how an unfortune situation can be the journey to great fortune, while seeming fortune can bring only loss and bad luck in the end.

So, now, I am going to bid adieu to that posting, and perhaps move in a new direction, although I am not sure exactly yet what that direction will be.

Jera, Year or Summer, is the rune of time, patience, the reaping and sowing of ones labors. It is a perfect sign for this week with the Winter Solstice on December 21 along with a lunar eclipse combining with the changing season. Forces are going out, new forces are coming in. In Wiccan lore, this is the time when the Child of Light returns, the reborn Sun, after the longest night. With his birth the days will start to become longer. Even though we are still operating in the dark time and in Northern Europe folk lore, it was still the dark season when the dead are still close whether for good or evil. But the seasons turn, the wheel turns, and we move forward with our lives.

The lunar eclipse is a fun phenomenon, although in most European lore, whether from Northern Europe or Mediterranean traditions, the eclipses were ill omens, although in astrology, the eclipse around the Northern Node of the Moon, otherwise known as the head of the Dragon, was considered fortunate. However, this lunar eclipse is with the southern node, or the dragon’s tail, and is considered a malefic point. Although, when it comes to the malefic virtues of astrology, they are often evil with good (ie bad results to those things people desire in life) and good with evil (they also diminish the bad things as well, making them not so bad). At the Strategic Sorcery blog, Jason Miller shares that in Tibetan view, eclipses are a time when the actions who take become more powerful, a 1000 times for lunar eclipses, and 10000 times for solar. So, keep in mind what you do while the eclipse happens, even if you cannot see it (such as me, as my skies are filled with rain clouds).

Tonight, I spent a good amount of time making various love products. Love bath salts, true love powder, love incense. I feel all kinds of loved up.

As I sat there making these products, each very different from each other in ingredients, I noticed some things. In my experience of love products they tend to three (3) certain types of scents. Those scents are sweet, floral, and musky. All three can be present in one product, but it is interesting to separate out the three into different products.

In this case, the Love bouquet bath was floral. As the strongest scents within it are lavender and rose, it makes sense. It was kind of refreshing because of that, and uplifting, like the feeling of new love, sweeping into your heart. The sparkle of infatuation and affection, or the sparkly new “I feel pretty and also a little twitter-pated” as well.

With a different scent was the True love powder. This just smelled sweet, a little green, but there was this vague, indescribable candy like smell. I don’t really know where it came from (as I didn’t really add any essential oils) and none of the herbs really seemed to smell like that either as I was measuring them out. Something about the process of grinding it up and mixing it together seemed to release this scent that wasn’t there before. That, or the Powers of Love were gracing me with their presence, which I don’t mind at all.

The final product, my Love incense, is a mixture of deep, heavy, musky smells. Patchouli figures strongly in this mixture, as does myrrh. My intent was something that is bit more sexy and seductive, and in a sense a bit more masculine, as floral scents are seen as being feminine, darker and muskier scents are seen as being more masculine. Suffice to say, I love this incense. It’s deep, it’s rich, and given time, I think it will develop some great complexity of scent. But I think it needs a lot of time to do that. I am going to give it a test run tomorrow though, just to see how it smells at the beginning. I have actually been sitting on the compounding of this incense for a while, as I made an oil from this recipe long ago, so I am curious to see how it comes out when I burn it. The oil I love as well, and as it is primarily rich, luxurious fixatives, it is really long lasting, and can be a little strong for some people. As it’s all botanical essential oils, I am impressed that it can last all day, while some of my other mixtures seem very fugitive in comparison.

Love, Love, Love, is really all I need right now.

Raidho reversed signifies challenges in journeys of all kinds, from physical travel, to spiritual travel. Interestingly enough, this rune was very helpful for me today. I had a journey from where I live, up into the heart of Los Angeles, a long, although short journey. As many people are aware, Los Angeles I known for it’s traffic, especially when it rains, as people seem to freak out about the liquid falling from the sky. Fortunately, I did this reading with plenty of time before I left, and I spent my morning meditation and ritual time, making offerings to Gods of travelers and journeys, with an additional offering left in the crossroads as I journey to my destination. Seeing that this rune appeared at the beginning of the week, and now it appears again reversed, tells me that it’s role and influence has no completed itself. What I find interesting is that this ending (and reversal) occurs on the day when the two benevolent planets of Astrology, Jupiter and Venus, are also changing the retrograde motion and moving forward. No longer does “prosperity decline, happiness pass away and covenants are broken” but instead they will now increase and improve, at least a little. It doesn’t necessarily solve all of your troubles, but with the direct presence of their benefic influence, things can improve again.

While the name of Gar means spear, and so might be a cognate of the Spear of Odhinn, Gungnir, that spear is also the axis mundi, the world center, often described as the World Tree Yggdrasil, whose name means the steed of Ygg, another name of the Allfather.
In essence it points to an open way, an open road, where nothing is set, and every action is a new opportunity. Where it will all lead is in question, because things can change, and what seems fortunate can turn unfortunate, and vice versa.

Ear signifies that this week is about endings and death. Things have reached their completion, and will not progress any further beyond that. My first thought reached out to the various spiritual beings who govern death, dying and the realms of the dead, from various pagan Gods, to the very popular folk saint, Santa Muerte (Saint Death). A favorite quote that often comes to mind when contemplating Ear and it’s effects, especially as it applies to people who engage in a magico-spiritual practice comes from The Invisibles by Grant Morrison. A transgendered brazilio-mexican sorceress who goes by the name epithet Lord Fanny, says to the foe “ I am a sorcerer, and death is my ally, not my enemy.” I have often contemplated that phrase, and it’s implications and an answer came to me about what that means. Death is part of the process of change. Something new cannot be created, unless something old passes away, and is destroyed. The caterpillar no longer exists when it becomes a butterfly. The tree is gone when it becomes the chair. The marble slab becomes the valued statue. In each of those things, part of the process of becoming, something about them experienced death, and they can never go back to being what they were before.

The inspiration that I received about Tiewaz reversed today, came about from a short phrase from the Orphic Hymns, found in the Hymn to Kronos (aka Saturn). The phrase is “Of subtle mind”. What Tiewaz reversed is telling me is that the wisdom, judgement and discernment that I have for myself, should be (or will be) kept to myself. Instead of spilling forth my own secrets, either in personal counsel or opinion or insight, it is something that I should keep to myself. The thoughts and purpose of my intentions are kept subtle (much like a subtle bodies, the parts of your being that are not materially visible, but only perceived spiritual vision.) and not made known to others.

Tiewaz signifies, judgement, discernment, integrity, and wisdom. Like the idea of the Pole star, which helps to give direction by night, Tiewaz gives guidance and direction, helping to know right from wrong, helpful from harmful, the need instead of the want. One of the traditional uses of Teiwaz was to be engraved or pressed into weapons on their blade, as a way to bring success and victory in battle. Tiewaz/Tyr was the Germanic god who was equaled with the Greco-Roman Mars/Ares, but unlike that concept of a bloody, battle loving deity, it is my understanding that the Germanic concept of War (and thus their War god) was a means of resolving disputes, and resolving conflict, not always in loss of lives and spilling blood, but in defeating your enemies because truth and the Gods were on your side. Thus placing Tiewaz on their weapons wasn’t about winning in bloody battle, but striking with discernment, as way to demonstrate your integrity and righteousness.
In having the discernment to see what is wrong, and exercising the judgement and wisdom to cut away the harmful, and so perhaps lose something in order to gain greater rewards.

While there is no rune poem for Khalk, I recently came across another method of divination, which I have started experimenting with. I recently acquired a translation of Greek magical papyri, which are spells, rituals and esoteric lore from ancient Egypt during its period of Greek domination, which was most of Egypt from Alexander until the fall of Rome. This period created a blending of religion and spiritual beliefs, primarily of Greek and Egyptian, but also of various middle eastern religious and spiritual beliefs. It is from this combining that Hermetic lore evolved, and these texts are an example of that lore. In this book there was an entry titled “The Homeric Oracle” short phrases taken from the works of Homer (The Iliad, The Odyssey) arranged on a system of three, six-sided lots or dice. One rolls the lots, and the number that comes up (being a combination of any number 1-6 3 times) and then consults the listing. The short quote is then the answer you are looking for. Out of context they can seem odd and strange, but when used in a reading, they might give some interesting advice. Today’s quote from Homer came from the Odyssey Ch 21 line 293:

“It is wine that wounds thee, honey-sweet wine, which works harm to others too” or in another translation “Honey-Sweet wine has the best of thee, which others also”

This quote comes from the ending of the Odyssey, in which Odysseus has returned to Ithaca, and entered his home in disguise as a beggar, to slay the suitors who seek his wife and property. The suitors think of him as a beggar, and accuse him of drunkenness, for desiring to string the bow that only Odysseus could string.

Khalk reversed, the overturned cup, combined with a statement about being drunk, to a man who has hidden his true identity, and presented an illusion to people who seek something that is unattainable. I think the two systems have wonderfully complemented each other. Illusion, deception, intoxication, khalk reversed indicates that things are not what they appear to be. Dreams are presented as reality, While falsity is made desirable. Are you thinking clearly and soberly, or is your mind influenced by your senses that have been altered and deceived?

Mirror Box Spell for Protection and Empowerment

This was a spell I did for client, who was under continuous spiritual attack for being gay.

The things that you will need are:

A box
Four mirrors
Modeling clay
Paint (white and red)
White vigil candle

Protection incense
Protection Oil

Gay Power Oil
Blessings Oil
A personal concern

Granulated Sugar
High John root pieces
Queen Elizabeth root pieces
Solomon seal root pieces
Calamus Root Pieces
Black Sampson root pieces
Safflower
Lavender

The firs step is preparing the box. Any box will do. In the photos given, the box I used was a photo box that can turn around. Paint the box white from top to bottom and the inside. White is a color of protection and spiritual power. Once the box has dried; paint on the outside, on each side of the box a symbol of protection. The symbol pictured is taken from Icelandic magic and is the Sign of Solomon, but any protection symbol will do. The symbol should be painted in red. Using the red paint, paint a symbol of power, strength or mastery on the inside of the box, on each inside wall. For my client, I painted the lower case greek Lambda, a symbol for the Gay Rights. Once the paint has dried, fix the four mirrors over the symbols on the outside of the box, so they are reflecting outward. The mirrors help to strengthen the protection, but reflecting the harmful forces away. With the box I used, I slid the mirrors into the picture frames.

Once that is completed, take the modeling clay, and shape it into a figure that resembles the person being protected. Once the figure is shaped, take a pin and carve into the chest of the figurine the name of the client. Once that is completed, baptize the figurine saying “I name you (client’s name), (Client’s Name) you are to me. At this point, integrate in the personal concern of the client. The concern I had was a piece of paper, with the client’s name written on it seven times, by the client himself. I wrapped the paper around the doll, and then proceeded to oil the doll with the Gay Power oil, stroking the oil towards me, to draw power, heal, and strengthen him. I then placed the figurine in the box. Mixing together the sugar and herbs, I prayed over them, asking for strength, wholeness, power and mastery for the client. Once it was thoroughly mixed, I poured the combination over the figurine, surrounding him with sweetness and power. I then sealed the box.

On the outside, I anointed the corners and top and bottom of the box with protection oil, and smoked the box in protection incense, praying for the client to be protected from harmful influences, and that the mirrors reflect the harm back up on the sources, causing them to see only what they wanted to see. As I did this, I turned the box on its pedestal, so the mirrors reflected all the directions. I then took the white vigil candle; fixed it with protection, gay power, and blessings oil, praying for the client to be protected, and that blessings and power fill the client.

I find myself working in three traditions of magic and spirituality, which seem to have a unique relationship as the come together, and then separate. The main traditions I work from are Mediterranean focused Wiccan Tradition, the many disparate elements of Northern European magic, and Southern US conjure. I really enjoy all three, and when I am working away at setting lights, calling to the Anemoi, or singing galdr, and sometimes all three, it’s really wonderful, but at the same time, it’s a lot of hard work.

The Wiccan tradition of which I am iniated is known as the Minoan Brotherhood. It was founded in the early 70’s in New York City, by a gay man. At that time, Wicca was rather homophobic, but yet it seems, many gay men were strongly attracted to it, and sought it out, some choosing to conceal their proclivities from covens, or being told that they had to act “in accordance with nature” and play a heterosexual role. The founder of the Minoan brotherhood had enough of this, and established this tradition, to create a space for men who wished to engage in Wicca/Witchcraft and also honor their sexual identities and Love. If you want to know more, google it (We are all modern and all) and that pretty much sums up what I can tell people, due to oaths of secrecy. Suffice to say, I read a lot about Ancient Greek gods, myths, and bronze age Mediterranean cultures, and it helps to inform my magical practice. I think defixiones are great and should really be brought back to.

When I first began my studies into magic and the occult, I began with the Runes, the alphabet of Northern Europe and Scandinavian cultures, which has been given various esoteric and magical attributes, both in myth, but also in modern times and scholars. One of my goals is to have one of the largest book collection dedicated to the esoteric subject, and I honestly think I may have achieved that goal, as most people seem to only have a few books. I can sign galdr, make bindrunes and taufr (runic talismans) and one of my spirit allies and teachers is most definitely old one-eyed Odhinn, who seems fond of Stella Artois. Magic, meditation, divination all seem to flow with from the runes for me, and I have found ways to integrate them into a lot of what I do.

The final tradition is Southern US folk magic, also called Hoodoo, Conjure, Rootwork, Witchcraft – which developed in the mixing pot of the United States, with a good strong dose of African magic and spirituality, mixed with European and Native American currents, and as time progressed a little bit of Asian got mixed in two, (just a little, very small amount, and most in the early twentieth century). I first learned about Conjure online, when I found Lucky Mojo in college. and it’s websites, and put a spark into my mind that I has not cooled down yet. A decade later, I found Lucky Mojo again, and became a student, then graduate of Catherine yronwode’s Hoodoo and Rootwork course, which was really educational, and continues to be so. It also connected me with other people who also practice Conjure, from folk whose family goes back to the Southern US, and family practices Conjure, to new people who are keen in learning what is a very uniquely US style, but which has become an almost universal style from the way magic became popular in the US. Considering how much of contemporary books about methods of spell casting and steeped in Hoodoo methods and traditions, it makes perfect sense that so many people are drawn to it.
Of course, it leaves me wondering and my head spinning when I get caught in the seeming fray between traditionalists and innovators within all these traditions. Using secrets of the Psalms in wiccan circles, while drawing runes on petitions for mojo bags, and working with Greek gods to aid my setting of lights, it just about makes my head go “boom!” But then I spend enough time working to get familiar with everything on their own terms, then I end up seeing the places where they can overlap. Yet I can see where I am doing my own thing, and yet also where I am following tradition. Yet, it also comes to the boundary where you realize, there is no tradition, no set way of doing some things because what exists now, didn’t exist back then, even if it was only 100 years ago. That is when the gift and genius and being worker of wonders comes in.

Experiences with subtle anatomy

One of the methods that I use in working with runes is meditation. I find it works really well for me, and in clearing my mind, it helps to clear everything else out.

Part of my meditation is reciting part of the Havamal, followed by a quick bit of runic galdr, going through the futhorc from Feoh to Gar. It’s pretty calming, and in allowing my voice to sing, sometimes keeping it even through it, sometimes varying pitch and rhythm with each rune, I feel a strong connection, and affirm that connection to the runes every time I do it, almost every day. As I sing their names, I visualize a circle of energy that forms around me, usually ruby red in color, which the runes emerge from and return to. When I reach Gar, it sits at the axis of this circle, and it’s points become kind of spokes, joining with it and forming a wheel.

When I originally started doing this, I noticed that at first, the runes seemed to be coming to my third eye center and then the circle would stabilize around my throat/shoulders. For the past month though, it has seemed to be operating at my solar plexus, and the intensity of the red was brilliant and shining. This past weekend, it moved back to my throat one day, the next day it climbed up to my third eye/crown, where the circle then became a shimmering/prismatic white, it seemed like a halo or crown sitting on my head, blazing letters of flaming light. This morning, when I reached the end of the rune galdr, the circles formed at every energy center I work with (which is five, root, solar plexus, heart, throat, eye/crown) and then starting from the base, and going up, each Gar came in, rippling up the central channel that unites them. They all seemed to be turning at different speeds, and felt like different colors (although I didn’t necessarily take the time to perceive them all) they all felt harmonious and unified together.
I am not sure what it all means, if anything, but it was a really awesome experience to have.

Runes, Time, Planets, Stars pt 2

In exploring the connection between runes and the planets, it seems that it was included as an after thought. Most of his writing about this area again focuses on cycles, mainly cycles of the Sun and Moon, also know the Great Cycle, when the two great lights re-align and repeat their patterns every 19 years. His inclusion of the outer planets, all the way out to “planet x” and he talks about another equally puzzling numerical series that somehow he relates to the runes, and days of the calendar. I think he actually spends al of 10 pages talking about the planets, before he turns back to this endless discussion of numerical sequences, and his odd alignments with runes. His treatment of the planets are of the most interest here though.

As I imagine, most of my readers are aware, the 7 classical planets are preserved in most cultures days of the week. Monday is the day of the Moon, Tuesday is the day of Mars, Wednesday is the day of Mercury, etc… In Germanic languages, many of the days are named after Germanic gods who were paralled with Greco-roman gods. Tuesday means the day of Tyr or Tiw, Wednesday is the day of Wodan/Odhinn, Thursday is the day of Thor, and Friday is the day of Freya/Frigga, with this pattern continuing with Sunday and Monday, as the words for the Sun and Moon are taken from Germanic languages, not latin. Sunna and Mani are the gods of the Sun and Moon, Sunna being the Goddess of the Sun (in contrast to the Greco-roman Helios and Apollo, who were male) and Mani, who is a God of the Moon (in contrast to Selene, Artemis and other Goddesses from southern Europe). Their name survive in Sunday (the day of Sunna) and Monday (the day of Mani. Saturday is a direct adapation of the Day of Saturn, as it seems there was no equivalent to in the Germanic gods for such a being. This is where things get odd, as the book states that Sunday is named for the Goddess Sol, whose sister is Mani, and Saturday is for Saeter, a by name of Loki. Yet, there is no evidence of this. One of the alternate names for Saturday that appears in Germanic languages is Laugardag, which means “washing day” as this was the day that people would bath, and clean. He presents this name as also a by name of Loki. This naming is different then most southern European cultures who either named it for Saturn, or adapted from the jewish practice of calling it Shabbat (which is where names like Samedi, Sabado, and the current german name Samstag, although other Germanic countries preserve the Greco-roman name in Zaterdag, which is Dutch).

The outright invention of making an equivalent like that, and presenting it in a factual manner just really bothers me. Through all of this, there is no connection made between the runes and the planets at all, which I find to be the most curious thing, as in traditional astrology, it was the planets that were of major interest and influence, and to ignore a relationship between the planets and the runes, seem to neglect a significant aspect of what a Runic astrology would be about.
The most difficult thing again is in the creation of a runic horoscope, where the runes are aligned again with the houses, signs, and directions. Nigel Pennick’s alignment of the runes onto the 12 house dividsion seems to again create problems, as the attributions and values just don’t seem to line up correctly between the runes, the seasons, and houses. His alignment breaks from the traditional lay out of the astrological chart, placing the vernal equinox at the midheaven, and moving Aries to that location as well, so that Berkana can align with Aries, and the solstices now fall on the ascendant and descendant with Dagaz and Jera. It really seems to defy the logic of the Elder Futhark and it’s meanings, and the layout of the house chart, where aries is located in the east, with the ascendant, and the first hour, which places it with the equinox, at least in the tropical zodiac. His alignment again, is also off centered, with 3 runes occuping the space over each sign, with only one sign in full, with the two others only taking up half of the degrees of the beginning and ending of other signs. Why he does just assign two runes to each zodiac, I am not really entirely sure, as the combination of such, while maybe imperfect, would not create this inelegant attribution where things don’t line up. In most Astrology as I know it, that seems to be determining factor, is the creation of an elegant system that describes spiritual verities and helps to communicate them to earth, through stars, planets, and equal numerical division. It seems that the Runic Astrology proposed so far, is anything but those qualities.

Runes, TImes, Planets, Stars

Recently I have acquired two older books dealing with Runes, seeming classics (in a sense) written by Nigel Pennick, Practical Magic of the Northern Tradition and Runic Astrology. The main focus of Runic Astrology, and one of the major chapters of Practical Magic, is Time, Planets, and Stars and how they related to the Runes, particularly the Elder Futhark. By time, I mean, hours of the day, parts of day and night (morning, evening etc…) months, seasons, lunar movement, and the solar year. By planets, I mean the seven classic planets (Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, and the Moon) and the stars are the Zodiac, but also other stars and constellations.

To be perfectly honest, my hope and expectations for the book Runic Astrology, were much higher then it delivered. The reason why I acquired this book, was mainly because of a great interest I have had in Astrology, and it’s processes, purposes and methods. This led me to read “The Three Books of Occult Philosophy” by Cornelius Agrippa, one of the foundational books of Western Occultism. It has also made me a major fan of the website “Renaissance Astrology” and Christopher Warnock, who is focused on the methods of Astrology before 1700, when Astrology essentially ruled the World (so to speak) and was a valued science by every scholar and philosopher of the time. The depth of knowledge that I have gained just from reading and studying his website, and following his blog has been wonderful, and some of the information that I have applied in understanding my own natal chart has shown great veracity, far more then any contemporary astrology practices have. With this foundation, I dove into Runic Astrology, hoping to find a way to connect the runes to astrology, the planets, the zodiac and tools and methods of astrological prediction and magic. I have to say, I was rather disappointed.

One of the main things that were talked about at length was the connection of Runes to parts and hours of the day, directions and seasons, solstices and equinoxes. This was all connected to a circular image, where those connections were laid down, with the elder futhark drawing the connection between them. It seemed the key to the diagram was the location of the rune dagaz, giving it to noon (or midday), which also connected it to the south, and the summer solstice. While it does seem correct in that placement (dagaz meaning day, and is thus a rune of light) that puts, in opposition to it, jera, the rune of harvest, the summer, the year, and of plenty, located at midnight, north, winter solstice, which seems a very odd location to put a rune that is also filled with powerful benevolent imagery.

Other things were also equally inexplicable, for example, in giving runic hours (24 runes = 24 hours makes sense, right) governed by an equal division, based on the half hour of the clock. So, feoh is in operation from 1:30 to 2:30 pm. This seems odd to me, as it stands distinctly from the planetary hours, which are divided by time of daylight, and are not an even 60 minutes long, but have varying lengths depending upon the duration of day and night during the year. Why an equal division is necessary seems curious to me, and then placing it on the half hour, it seems to just make things unnecessary difficult.

One of the other functions of time that he looked at, is what was called the lunar seles. The seles would otherwise be known as the mansions of the moon. In contrast to Western practice, the book only gives 28 mansions (which is following Vedic astrology), while Agrippa (from Arabic methods) gives 29 mansions of the moon. In giving those 28 mansions, he assigns them runes from the elder futhark and the anglo-saxon runes, leaving out one rune, because there are normally 29 of them. But when the western tradition uses 29 mansions, one could use all of those runes, in placement with all of the mansions. The question is then to how to place the runes in the lunar mansions. While Pennick ignores the existing traditions of the lunar mansions, his allocation gives the first rune (feoh) to the first mansion (ie the first day following the dark moon) and going forward until the last rune (ear) given to the dark moon. While the last rune may fit well, the allocation of other runes doesn’t seem quite so correct, as the full moon would correspond with peorth, which does not seem quite so perfect an alignment. At least, if the traditions of the lunar mansions were applied, the full moon would fall in different runes all the time, as would the dark moon, and give different aspects and purposes to different times, instead of always assigning the same values to the phases of the moon.

The final oddity of his time values is the runic half month. Because there are 24 runes, the regular year gets divided into approximately 2 periods of 15 days each, where one rune governs that time period. They aren’t necessarily aligned with anything, not the zodiac, not the months, or anything, but just this cycle, following along with dagaz governing the 15 day period where the summer solstice occurs and jera happening when the winter solstice occurs. It doesn’t really seem to fit into any type of time keeping, but is something established all on its own, which also doesn’t have any historical basis, or alignment with symbolism of anything else.
